KATE SPADE SHOWS HOT PINK AND OVERSIZED PLAID FOR FALL

"It was whimsical fairlytale," said Creative Director Deborah Lloyd at the presentation of Kate Spade New York's fall 2015 collection on Friday, when asked about her inspirations. "We've seen a lot of them in film recently, but I loved them growing up."
Lloyd is British, so her childhood reference points skew European — Roald Dahl's "Tales of the Unexpected" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." Truly Scrumptious, the character who famously sang that film's theme song, was Lloyd's childhood heroine. "There's an ode to her in the chocolate box bows and frills and pink." But the influence of one American film, "Fantastic Mr. Fox," visibly had a huge influence in the fur accents and bright red plaids. "You'll see a few foxy ladies in here," she said.
But the collection does not need the context of reference material to be truly covetable. As to be expected from the brand, everything is girly and lighthearted in a delightful way. Heels with crystal detailing and black and nude loafers are sure to be crowd pleasers. The handbags were on the tamer side in comparison to everything else, but a series of clutches emblazoned with a fox's face were a cute play on the woodland theme. My favorite was a fur stole that elevated a thick plaid skirt (and kept shoulders warm) without losing the youthful exuberance throughout the collection. Lloyd's favorite piece was plaid, too — the oversized coat. "I just love that," she said. "On a day like today, I just want that." Us, too.
